High School Students...Welcome to the 2010-2011 Faith Formation Year!

I hope everyone had a relaxing and joyful summer. As we head into another year of Faith Formation, it is my pleasure to present to the parish the new curriculum for the upcoming year.

The High School students will be using a whole new paradigm. In the past, students were offered only one class per grade level. The problem with this was that if the student had no interest in the subject that was being taught, the student quickly lost interest and quit learning in the class. This year we are proud to offer all high school students who have been confirmed two classes to choose from for the upcoming year. The two classes being offered are: "Growing in Faith" and "The Great Adventure Bible Study."

"Growing in Faith" will be a class without a set curriculum. Students will be asked to provide questions and concerns about life and faith. From these, a curriculum will be created, and God willing, these questions will be explored and answered. This class is to be a non-traditional class incorporating PowerPoint presentations, videos, small group discussions, and various activities.

Also offered will be "The Great Adventure Bible Study." This class will cover salvation history as understood using the Bible. The goal is to provide high school students with the skills needed to understand and appreciate the Bible both in daily life and in the life of the Church. This class will incorporate both a DVD presentation by the world renowned Catholic Biblical Scholar, Jeff Cavins, and small group discussions.

For those high school students who will be attending Confirmation during the upcoming year, the curriculum will follow the book entitled "Introduction to Catholicism" published by the Midwest Theological Forum. This curriculum will cover all four pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Students will be taught using PowerPoint presentations, small group discussions, and various activities.

In closing, I would like to invite all middle school and high school students to check out the new youth room at St. Patrick's. The youth room is located on the main level of the building right across from the library. The room includes a ping pong table, a foosball table, and a large sectional. Please come and check out the room!

I hope to see you soon, Nate Rose
